All children deserve an equal chance to enjoy Christmas
Christmas can be a joyful time, but for those facing a crisis, it can be incredibly hard. Families with children and young people struggling to put food on the table and people facing tough times are hit the hardest.
The 2023 report on economic disadvantage in NSW shows that children are still the most affected by poverty, with 15.2% living below the poverty line. In July 2024, over 7,000 people in Northern Sydney areas were on Job-Seeker or Youth Allowance, actively searching for work.
In some areas where CCA NSW operates, like Guildford and South Granville, childhood poverty is rising, with rates over 40%. The cost-of-living crisis is also taking a toll on mental health, especially for single parents, with 90% saying they can’t afford essentials.
Real-life story
Meet Emma, a single mum doing her best to care for her two kids: a 3-year-old daughter and a 12-year-old son. With rent going up by $110 a week, she’s struggling to keep up. Emma says,
“We are behind on bills, and there’s nothing left for anything else. I’m worried about my son—he can’t join after-school sports or hang out with friends, and he is getting lonely”.
For Emma, the hardest part is knowing her children are missing out on the joys of childhood and will go without this Christmas. You can help families like Emma’s regain some hope and joy.
