– Suggestions from CCA financial counsellors –
- Pay any rent arrears or mortgage payments, pay rate arrears, pay body corporate arrears. If you don’t have arrears this may be a good opportunity to pay a week in advance as a little insurance for the future.
- Ensure your utilities (electricity, gas, phone) are up to date.
- Pay any debt arrears or make an advanced payment. The banks and other lenders are saying they will assist customers who fall into hardship but a show of good faith at this early stage my hold you in good stead if you get into difficulties later. If you have a small debt that you can pay in full, or nearly pay in full try making any offer of settlement. The banks sometimes accept as little as 60-70% as full payment. CCA financial counsellors can help you with this if you need it.
- If you have any medical or dental needs this may be the time to address them.
- If you need to update any electrical appliances or household items, it is a great time to do this. CCA Emergency Relief workers can help you access whitegoods replacement items at a cheaper rate.
- This may be a good time to stock up the pantry, shop at CCA Community Store and your money will go even further. Treat yourself to something special!
- If you have anything left over, put it aside. These are uncertain times and a little in reserve will give you a backstop for whatever the future may bring. It will also help relieve stress.
