Looking After Your Mental Health During the Festive Season

by Vivian Ng

Christmas is a time for getting together and celebrating with family and friends. However, it can also be a very difficult time for some. Lots of us feel under pressure during the festive period, whether we are spending time with or without family and friends, financial stresses, packed schedule, pressure of giving gifts and a long to-do list can all contribute to stress and build anxiety.

Christmas can turn from being a season of joy into a time of panic, loneliness and depression which can cause sleeping difficulty, loss of appetite or feeling low. It is important that you recognise stress early and follow the below tips to help you take care of your mental wellbeing throughout the holidays.

Tips for a mentally healthy holiday season:

Practice Self-Care– Most importantly, make sure you put aside time to look after yourself, both physically and mentally. Try to stick to your usual exercise routine and maintain healthy diet. Don’t let your busy schedule take over your regular routine.

Set Realistic Expectations – You may have a long to-do-list and try to please your friends and families. Be easy on yourself and it’s OK to say no to any functions or events that will make you feel uncomfortable, bring up painful memories or cause anxiety. Keeping things simple will make the holidays more enjoyable and put less stress on your mental health. Put your time and energy into the activities and people you enjoy the most.

Ask for Help– There could be a variety of ways you need help, it could be help to get through your to-do-list or it may even be someone to provide emotional support, a listening ear, or assistance during a traumatic time. Any hard feelings you experience this time of the year, such as sadness, fear, anxiety, or anger, are valid and you’re allowed to experience these.
